Journal 4 Steven

I think that the declaration that stood out to me would have to be roman numeral VIII. In this passage he talks about how we strived to create this new technology and all of these new advancements in warfare. And how we went about teaching other countries to be strong and how to fight. But in one day we realized that in doing this we also have put ourselves at greater risk. And all it took was for one rouge country to take advantage of this and thats exactly what happened. I think we were giving other countries to much help and to much technology and we were creating to much technology without enough regulations ourselves. But it was way to late to fix it and we had to have something like 9/11 to show us that which I wish that wasn't the case.

One of my favor its concepts he talks about in his second essay would have to be where he talks about how we as a people have to change for the better not just relay on the government to do it for us. And I think that this is so true. We relay way to much on the few people who are running the government and making the big decisions. We are having them make are food provide are shelter make are clothing and practically run our lives. We need to make a change as a country and stop relaying so much on politics. He says in this paragraph "the danger in other words, is that people will think they have made a sufficient change if they have altered their "values," or had a "change of heart," or experienced a "spiritual awakening," and that such change in passive consumers will cause appropriate changes in public experts." (13). What I get from that is we need to make changes in our actions to. Making some changes in our values is not going to help are economy or our environment. We need to go take action and make our country a better place.

The term that I thought was very important would have to be "Free Market." He talks about this type of economy a lot in his essay so I thought I would look into it more. A Free Market Economy is an economy were prices for goods and consumers are made and set freely by the consumers and sellers. Unlike other types of economy the government had very little control over what is being made and sold. The people have the say in what they want to make and how much thy want to sell it for. The act of supply and demand determines the right prices of goods. The government docent have the big presence that it does in say a Communist economy. I think understanding what this type of economy is will help you understand what Berry is talking about when he is talking about types of economies and our own economy

I think that a question that could be asked would be what are the best things that other countries are doing for their economy that we could do? By studying this we could find things to do better in are own economy. Taking the strengths from other countries and applying it to ours would be a great thing to do. I think that this source right here would be a great source to find more information

  1. I agree with you and Berry in that we need to produce our own food and shelter locally instead of relying on a large, central government. Although, it is hard for me to imagine a life where we farm our own food locally and we hunt for our own food. Should we produce for ourselves and create a harder lifestyle, or should we continue to rely on the government but have an easier lifestyle?

  2. I agree that we should do something about our own economy instead of politicians who just want money to be famous and ruin our lives. By letting ourselves be in charge of what we should do with our economy and environment, we can actually make it easier because we are the people who do more work than politicians. I also liked number eight in the first essay as well because it kinda goes to show that we as a country didn't know what we were getting ourselves involved in.

  4. I believe rebuilding our own economy in a new way would benefit the people in so many ways than what outsourcing as ever done. If we were to become more self reliant, then more jobs would be created here in the states. How many times have we heard about holds on certain products and food supplies? We take a lot of risks getting supplies from other countries. If we were to get supplies from here in the states, and have problems like that from time to time, then we would have nobody to blame, but ourselves. And having dealt with these issues before, I think we would have a better close eye on things.
