Journal Four: Michael Trawinski

1. Number twenty-three in Thoughts in the Presence of Fear, by Wendall Berry spoke to me the most because I do not know exactly what position that I should take on it. Berry stated in this particular declaration that schools should teach students about Islamic culture in order for them and other people to understand their culture, instead of having the media be more into describing them as being evil. In my opinion, I think that maybe students should learn about Islam in order so that they can realize for the most part that not all Islamic nations and/or people are bad in the world as they believe in peace instead of violence. The students can also learn about Islamic backgrounds so that they can get an understanding of what these people believe in.

2. I think that one idea which Berry has in The Idea of a Local Economy which also made sense to me was when he stated, "a corporation is not a person. A corporation, essentially, is a pile of money to which a number of persons have sold their moral allegiance" (22). This makes sense because corporations are really a group of people who work for money and earn lots of it unlike other people. Berry states that he does not intend to think that corporations are bad, but instead he thinks of corporations as being involved with a bad economy, especially around the time that the essay was written.

3. One word that Berry uses in The Idea of a Local Economy is oversimplification, meaning to describe something in a way that leads to misunderstanding due to lack of facts and other information. Understanding this word is important because Berry uses it on the first page of the essay when he states, "we have to be aware also that as issues rise into popularity they rise also into the danger of oversimplification" (11). When he uses the word oversimplification, Berry appears to be making a big statement about what the entire essay is about, which is that people tend to oversimplify the current state of the economy.

4. With this essay, I think that it is possible that we should know more about some of the effects which a local economy can have on the community of a particular area. For example: what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of a local economy? The only way to really find out about this is to read the local newspaper or watch a local news station. Also too, keep in mind to watch national news such as CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC to find out if a local economy is for sure better than a global economy.

  1. I also wrote about the fact that a corporation is thought of as a person. I agree that it should not be, corporations don't care about the individual, all they care about is making a profit. I also like your declaration comment. I agree that schools should teach about other countries as long as it is done in the right way with no prejudice or bias which tends to always happen.
