Exploration Two: Alexandra Edwards

My name is Alexandra Edwards, my nickname is Alex. I've lived in Marion my whole life. I graduated from River Valley High School. I swam for nine years, all four years of high school and when I graduated I had four school records and I had lettered all four years. Swimming is my favorite sport but I also love football. I am also a lifeguard in the summers at Lincoln Park Aquatics Center in Marion.
One of my senior pictures at my favorite place, the pool!
In Maury Graham’s profile I found it interesting that there is a Hobo Convention. This whole story is very interesting to me because my brother works in North Platte, Nebraska on the Union Pacific Railroad. He is a special agent for the railroad and he often has to arrest or escort the hobos off the rail yard. It’s nice to learn the difference between hobos and bums.

While looking at some of the websites about hobos I found that there is a hobo code which I found interesting because in today’s culture you think that hobos are people who don’t respect the law or other people but according to their laws that is quite the opposite. However, while reading that I was wondering how many hobo truly follow those laws and have these laws been forgotten by the new generation. I also found it interesting that the website has an unwanted section tell others about hobos that have not followed the laws and warning them to keep their distance from the unwanted.

  1. I found it very interesting that your brother works on the railroad and has to escort hobos off of the trains. While reading this story I was wondering if it was still relevant today but you answered that for me. The hobo code seems very strange to me and i also wonder if they actually use it often.

  2. It is definitely nice to have some clarification. I was always under the impression that hobos and bums were about the same people. I guess I was wrong.
