Exploration Two: Lydia Freudenberg

My name is Lydia Freudenberg and I am a freshman here at OSU Marion. My major is international business with a minor in fashion merchandising.  Fun fact, I have been to France and I love chocolate cake. Here is my face.
This is a photo I used for my Senior High
School photos. My mother took it on our
screened in porch.
I really enjoyed the profile on Lawrence W. “Happy” Davis. The tone was a blast to read. It was if I could hear Happy's voice, and him getting all excited when he talked about the roaring days of being a Pullman Porter. Happy almost made being a Pullman sound glamorous. It would have been thrilling to see Babe Ruth, Big Bands and the Yankees though.  What I found significant is how optimistic Happy was. He never allowed the raciest passengers push him around, and I'm sure being apart of The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters helped. And I believe that being optimistic is important to remember when we all enter into the career world and face coworkers and bosses who we may not like, or face struggling projects. Learning to take a deep breath, enjoy life, and to make friends will always be important.

While going through the list Mike provided about Hobos, I came across the interesting little website, Hobo.com. Going through the tabs, I fell upon the Hobo Code. Not only was it interesting, but made me realize that being a Hobo is no joke. Hobos have strict rules, or guidelines, that are given. Some are as quoted, "Don't take advantage of someone who is in a vulnerable situation, locals or other Hobos" or, "Try to stay clean and always boil up whatever possible." The list continues with 14 other guidelines, ranging from helping children (while not being creepy), avoiding alcoholism, and to always give a testimony in Hobo court.

  1. I totally agree with you about being optimistic! I try to be as optimistic as possible because I think it helps me to keep pushing through whatever my obstacle maybe. When I enter into the career world I'm sure I will have several different obstacles to over come and I will need something to keep me going. I believe that the positive thoughts can really help me to do that. I also think that optimism is what helped Happy get through all of the racist customers and any other obstacles he may have had.

  2. I completely agree with you when you talk about the hobo code and how its no joke. This blows me away how sophisticated and well developed the Hobo community is! I also agree when you talked about how "Happy" made being a Pullman sound like one of the most amazing Jobs out there!

  3. It's so interesting that there is a Hobo Code! It shows how inaccurate my (and probably many others) view on hoboes was. They really do care for not only each other in the hobo community, but those who are not part of the community. This is a really admirable and respectful list of rules to uphold.
