Exploration Two and Introduction from Christina Peck

My name is Christina Peck and I am from Marysville. I am majoring in Health Sciences to be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. A fun fact about myself is that I love to play lacrosse. I have three younger sisters, which is fun because two are twins and are thirteen, and the other is four so there is a big age difference between us. I’m also a huge Game of Thrones fan (April can’t come fast enough).

One of the things that struck me about Maury Graham was how he made sure to emphasize the differences between hoboes and bums; bums will rob you to make their living, while hoboes do odd jobs for people wherever they are to earn their food and money. Before reading this profile, I had no idea there was a difference between a bum and a hobo because I thought they were two interchangeable words. Hoboes have a community surrounding them who will help each other survive, while bums couldn't care less about their counterparts.

After doing some research, something that was pretty profound was how shameless Graham was of his lifestyle. For example, The New York Times reported that when The Washington Times asked him if it was true that some hoboes wore deodorant, he replied, "It's a shame, but I don't know what we can do about it." It's pretty clear that he is proud of the community he's apart of. I figured all "hoboes" were constantly trying to get out of their current lifestyle to "better" themselves. However, this not the case at all. Most are quite comfortable and, like Maury Graham, proud to be in their situation. I think it's interesting that most of us will never get to half the self-fulfillment that hoboes experience. While we're worrying about whether we should have gone for a higher degree, or if we're really living to our full potential, they're quite satisfied.

  1. We definitely have something in common, I'm going to school to be a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner so we both have a love for children. Good luck !

  3. I totally agree with you. I had no idea that there was a difference between a hobo and a bum. I thought they were the exact same. Then I read this interview and I was completely surprised to learn that they were two different types of people. Also after reading the profile, it was interesting to learn that hobos try to by good people.
