Exploration Two: Lacie

Hi, I’m Lacie

I’m nineteen years old and I’m a sophomore here at OSU Marion for Criminology. I hope to one day become a police officer or detective. I work at a bar/grill called Boondocks and I love it.  I have two siblings an older sister and fun fact, a twin brother! I graduated from Highland High school just about 45 minutes from Marion and I cheered there for two years. I'm a very outgoing person and I love to meet new people.(:
That tattoo is my fourth one, with many more to come.
Maury Graham's Profile was very interesting and the thing that stuck out most to me was that there is actually a difference between a Hobo and a Bum. This whole time I thought that they were the same thing and that there were just two different names for them. I knew that a bum was someone who didn't work for their money but begged for it instead but to be honest I thought that a hobo did the same thing. I hadn't realized until reading Maury Graham's profile that a hobo was a step higher in class and actually worked for their money or even a meal.
I visited Hobo.com and I specifically found the What is a Hobo? tab to be interesting. It gave me the definition, "A Hobo wanders and works, a Tramp wanders and dreams and a Bum neither wanders or works. Another thing I found to be interesting on this website was Hobo signs. If I came across one of these signs I would never in a million years know what they mean of course but I'm sure if a Hobo came across one of our slang terms nowadays they wouldn't know what it means either. It's so weird to me that their culture in the way that they communicate is so different from the way that we communicate.
Symbols hobos used to communicate

  1. I saw this picture on Hobo.com as well and found it very interesting as well. I think this really helps people understand how different bum and hobo's are. Hobo's leave signs when they stopped somewhere to work, while bums never move. It almost makes you wonder why someone would want to a bum. Before, I felt bad for bums, but now it makes me loose respect for them.

  2. I thought the same thing as well about hobos. The hobo signs are an excellent way to see how hobos communicate with each other and for us to understand how they communicate. Overall the biggest part of what we all learned by reading the profile is that hobos travel and work for a living unlike bums. Good topic overall.

  3. I love that you posted the picture to show the different symbols. I remember watching a Criminal Minds episodes and they showed some of these symbols, like the kindhearted lady. This whole story has given me more respect for hobos but lost all respect for bums.
