Hello everybody! I’m Michael Trawinski. Some of you might
remember me from other classes so it’s great to see you all again. I am quiet
most of the time, but feel free to talk with me anytime because I am very nice.
This is my fourth semester here at OSUM. I am planning on probably being a
history major since I’m really interested in the past, especially Europe. I
also like reading about what life was like in the past, such as music and
movies. If you happen to like listening to instrumental folk music, such as
Irish music, then I’m sure we could talk a lot about that. I am also a fan of
the Back to the Future movies, which the first one is celebrating its 30th
anniversary this year. I am also excited because this is also the year that the
main characters travel to in the second film, being the films are about time
travel. I do enjoy reading fantasy novels, Star Wars novels, and Edgar Allan Poe stories.
"Edgar Allan Poe, a powerful and spooky author"
What struck me as most interesting about Maury Graham's profile is that he talked of being a hobo as his life and that it is a form of work when he describes how they all carry shovels with them. Before I read this profile I always thought a hobo was just a sort of homeless person, but after reading this I realized that it is really a form of work and that they always try to jump onto a train in order to travel around to get to wherever they want to go.
I read about Maury Graham on Wikipedia and learned that he was a hobo for a while, then he joined the military during World War Two. I found this interesting as to what I explained about what I thought a hobo was in the last paragraph. The Hobo Minstrel said that hobos travel together in groups and attend gatherings. One important detail I read on hobo.com explained the difference between a hobo, a tramp, and a bum. "A hobo is a person who travels to work. A tramp is a person that travels and won't work. A bum is a person that will neither travel or work."(hobo.com). This was a very good description that made me understand that hobos work and travel for a living. Instead of being homeless they travel around and do work for others.

I always thought that a hobo and a bum were the same thing but its nice to see the definition of the two. It's also interesting that Maury Graham was in the military during World War Two, it just shows that he served his country and from what i could tell from the story that he was an all around good person.
ReplyDeleteI find history really interesting too man! also thanks for explaining the job and work life of hobos more.
ReplyDeleteI also found the difference between hobos and bums to be very interesting. the power of choice is amazing. hobos choose to give up their superficial and material lives for the care free adventure that is riding the rails. it is inspiring that these people are willing to give up al they had so they can work to have the lives that they wanted.
