Journal 7: Mr. Tanimoto
So far Mr. Tanimoto is the most interesting. His tenacious attitude and hard-work are characteristics that I strongly admire. From running seven miles followed by swimming to ferrying the wounded across the river, he has continued to push through and help those in need. If he cannot help them, he will try to get them help. One example of this is when he speaking to an Army doctor, "Why have you not come to Asano Park? You are badly needed there." He does not win this argument, nor does he get a doctor to come back to Asano Park, but he makes a valid effort. Regardless of outcome, he tries and continues to fight on.
Firebombing is the action of dropping incendiary bombs in an attempt to destroy or damage a target through the use of fire. According to The Asia Pacific Journal: Japan Focus, the firebombing of Tokyo began on the night of March 9-10. Sixty-four cities were destroyed and approximately 100,000 Tokyoites were killed. This was called the "Great Tokyo Air Raid." This air raid was highly effective in lowering the moral of the Japanese military. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the final straws that broke the Emperor's ability to continue fighting and ultimately surrendered on September 2, 1945.

I also agree that Mr. Tanimoto is the most interesting character. What he did for all those people was truly remarkable. He saved so many lives and for that he is a hero. It seems as the fire bombings did widespread damage whereas the atomic bombs did heavy damage to just one city. Both however proved to be very devastating.
ReplyDeleteOh, that explains why Japan surrendered so willingly after Hiroshima and Nagasaki: they couldn't get a break from the constant bomb raids!
